How many hours can your employer ask you to work in the UAE? Are you paid extra for staying late or working on your day off? These are some of the most common questions from private-sector employees. The rules come from the UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021) and its executive regulations. Here is a plain-English summary.
Normal working hours
- The maximum normal working time is 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week.
- Hours can be increased or reduced for certain sectors or types of work under the executive regulations.
- Time spent travelling to and from work is generally not counted as working hours.
- Employees should get breaks so they do not work more than about five consecutive hours without a rest.
Working hours during Ramadan
During the holy month of Ramadan, private-sector working hours are normally reduced by two hours a day. The government usually announces the exact arrangements each year.
Overtime: the basic rules
- Your employer can ask you to work overtime when work requires it.
- Overtime should generally not exceed 2 hours a day, except in specific situations, such as preventing serious loss or an emergency.
- Total working hours, including overtime, should not exceed 144 hours every three weeks.
How overtime is paid
| Situation | Minimum pay or compensation |
|---|---|
| Normal overtime | Basic hourly wage + at least 25% |
| Overtime between 10 pm and 4 am | Basic hourly wage + at least 50% (except shift workers) |
| Work on your weekly rest day | Another rest day in exchange, or basic wage + at least 50% |
Overtime is usually calculated on your basic salary, not your total package with allowances.
Simple example
If your basic salary is AED 4,800 a month and you work 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, your basic hourly rate is roughly AED 4,800 ÷ (26 × 8) ≈ AED 23. Normal overtime would be paid at about AED 23 × 1.25 ≈ AED 29 per hour. (Companies may use slightly different calculation methods; check your payslip and contract.)
Who is not covered by overtime rules?
Some senior roles, such as managers and supervisors with real management authority, may be excluded from certain overtime provisions. Check your contract and company policy if you hold a senior position.
Weekly rest day
Employees are entitled to at least one paid weekly rest day. Many companies give two days, often Saturday and Sunday, but this depends on the employer.
Tips for employees
- Keep your own record of overtime hours, especially if your company does not use a time system.
- Check your payslip each month to see whether overtime is included.
- Confirm overtime requests in writing (email or message) where possible.
- If you have concerns, raise them with HR first. If the problem continues, you can contact MOHRE.
What if your employer does not pay overtime?
Speak to HR and keep evidence: rosters, emails, attendance records and payslips. If it is not resolved, you can file a complaint through MOHRE's channels (website, app or call centre 600 590000). Free zone employees should check their free zone's employment regulations.
