Many UAE jobs — especially in sales, field service and logistics — list "UAE driving licence" as a requirement. Even when it isn't required, being able to drive opens up far more job options and places to live. Here's how new residents get a UAE licence.
First: you need UAE residency
To get a UAE driving licence as a resident, you generally need a valid residence visa and Emirates ID. Visitors can usually drive rental cars on certain foreign or international licences, but that's not the same as holding a UAE licence — and employers hiring drivers expect the UAE one.
Route 1: Exchange your home licence
If your licence is from an eligible country, you may be able to swap it for a UAE licence without lessons or a road test. Dubai's RTA accepts direct exchange for licences from more than 50 countries — including GCC states, most European countries and a number of others in Asia and the Americas. In 2025 alone, Dubai replaced tens of thousands of foreign licences this way.
A typical exchange involves:
- Checking your country is on the current eligible list (in your emirate's licensing authority website or app)
- An eye test at an approved optician
- Your original, valid home licence (sometimes with a translation or consulate letter)
- Emirates ID and passport
- Paying the fees
The list changes — countries are added over time — so check before assuming you're not eligible.
Route 2: Train and test at a driving institute
If your country isn't on the exchange list, you'll need to get the licence through an approved driving school. The process usually includes:
- Opening a file at a licensed driving institute
- An eye test
- Theory lessons and a theory test
- Practical lessons (the number depends on your experience and the institute's assessment)
- Internal assessment, then a yard test (parking and manoeuvres) and a road test with the authority
Experienced drivers from non-exchange countries may be able to take a shortened course. Ask the institute what packages they offer for people who already drive.
How long and how much?
An exchange can be done in a single day. Training from scratch takes longer and costs significantly more, depending on how many lessons you need and how many attempts you take to pass. Budget for this if a licence is required for your target job, and ask the driving school for a full price breakdown before you pay.
Driving licences and jobs
- Sales and field roles: a light vehicle licence (cars) is often essential.
- Delivery and logistics: roles may need a motorcycle licence or a heavy vehicle licence, depending on the vehicle.
- Your CV: list "UAE driving licence (light vehicle)" clearly near the top if you have it — recruiters filter for it.
