UAE Golden Visa for Employees: Eligibility, Salary Requirements & How to Apply (2026)

Most people hear "UAE Golden Visa" and picture property investors or tech founders. What doesn't get talked about enough is that a large share of Golden Visa holders are just employees — accountants, engineers, teachers, nurses — who crossed a salary and qualification line most working professionals don't realize applies to them.
If you're working in the UAE, or planning to, here's what actually qualifies you, what it costs, and how the process really works right now.

What the Golden Visa Actually Gives You

It's a long-term UAE residency visa, valid for 10 years and renewable, that doesn't depend on your employer for sponsorship. That's the part that matters most: once you hold it, you're not tied to a single company. You can change jobs, take a career break, or even stay in the country between roles without your residency collapsing the moment your labour contract ends.
It also lets you sponsor:
  • Your spouse
  • Your children (unmarried, with no age limit for children with special needs)
  • Your parents
  • Domestic staff, such as a nanny or driver
Dependents get residence permits that generally run alongside your own Golden Visa term.

Do You Qualify as an Employee?

There isn't one single bar — the requirements depend on which employee category you fall into.

Skilled professionals (the most common route)

This is where most working applicants land. You'll generally need:
  • A UAE employment contract or verified salary certificate
  • A monthly salary of at least AED 30,000
  • A role classified as MOHRE Level 1 (managers and business executives) or Level 2 (specialists in fields like engineering, healthcare, IT, education, law, business, or culture)
  • At least a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent recognised qualification
  • A valid UAE practicing licence, if your profession requires one — doctors, pharmacists, and teachers are common examples

Executives and senior managers

If your title and responsibilities sit at a genuine executive level, the salary bar is higher — typically AED 50,000 a month — but the degree and MOHRE classification requirements work the same way.

Specialized talent (no salary threshold)

Doctors, scientists, inventors, creatives in culture and the arts, and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields can qualify through recognition of their expertise rather than a fixed salary figure. This route usually asks for recommendation letters, proof of practical experience, and an accredited degree instead.

Documents You'll Actually Need

  • Valid passport and current UAE visa or entry permit
  • UAE-approved employment contract
  • Proof of your MOHRE occupational classification (Level 1 or 2)
  • Attested bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification
  • Valid practicing licence, where your profession requires one
  • Employment certificate from your employer
  • Salary certificate, plus roughly six months of bank statements showing you meet the minimum salary
  • Passport-sized photo meeting UAE visa specifications

How to Apply, Step by Step

  1. Check which category fits you. Skilled professional, executive, or specialized talent — the paperwork differs slightly for each.
  2. Get your documents in order, including attestations for your degree if it wasn't issued in the UAE.
  3. Submit your application through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Security (ICP) at icp.gov.ae, or through your emirate's own channel — in Abu Dhabi, for example, that's the TAMM platform via the Abu Dhabi Residents Office.
  4. Pay the applicable fees (see below).
  5. Complete your medical test and biometrics appointment.
  6. Wait for review. Processing typically takes anywhere from about a week to two months, depending on your category and how complete your documents are.
  7. Receive your visa, issued for 10 years.
  8. Apply for your Emirates ID to complete the process.

What It Costs

Budget roughly AED 4,500–5,000 for the main applicant, which usually breaks down to approximately:
  • Visa application fee: around AED 2,857
  • 10-year Emirates ID: around AED 1,153
  • Medical examination: around AED 700
Adding family members costs extra — expect around AED 5,775 per dependent for their residence permit, plus their own medical insurance, which is mandatory for anyone you sponsor.

Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected or Delayed

  • Applying under the wrong MOHRE classification. If your job title on paper doesn't match a Level 1 or 2 classification, the application stalls even if your actual work qualifies.
  • Salary certificates that don't match your bank statements. Authorities cross-check both — a certificate claiming AED 30,000 with deposits that don't reflect it is a red flag.
  • Unattested degrees. A degree from outside the UAE usually needs attestation before it's accepted as proof of qualification.
  • Assuming your employer has to apply for you. For most employee categories, you can self-nominate through ICP directly — you don't need to wait on HR.

Golden Visa vs. Green Visa: The Quick Distinction

If you've read our Freelance Visa vs. Remote Work Visa breakdown, you already know the Green Visa is built for freelancers and self-employed professionals with no employer sponsor. The Golden Visa serves a different purpose entirely — it's for employees, investors, and specialized talent who want long-term security that isn't tied to a single job or a single sponsor, freelance or otherwise.
Rules around salary thresholds and required documents can shift, so always confirm the current criteria directly on icp.gov.ae or your emirate's residency portal before applying.
